STOP CHILD ABUSE !
“ On 30.01.2014 a girl of age around 9 years, resident of Kharagpur in the district of Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, was recovered dead (lower portion was uncovered) by local people in a paddy field (Fig. 1). The deceased was missing from 29.01.2014 evening while she went to the neighbour’s house. As opined by the near relatives and the local people, the girl died due to fatal sexual assault and murder by smothering. Police suspected the case to be a sexual assault and murder while the victim resisted rape. On the next day (31.01.2014) the body was brought to the mortuary of the Midnapore Medical College, Midnapore, West Bengal for medico-legal autopsy.” ( A report from Indian Journal of Forensic and Community Medicine ).

Sadly this is not the story of only one single child rather of lakhs of kids who unfortunately face this brutality every single day. Child abuse not only leaves the victim traumatised for whole life , but also becomes a difficult phase for the victim’s family. There have been cases where the family has suppressed the victim’s pleas , in order to avoid humiliation , which has somewhere given power to the abuser, to continue this crime.
Child abuse is any form of harm , emotional , physical and mental , intended
against a child . It can take many forms.
PHYSICAL ABUSE-
It involves physically hitting a child , causing injuries on the body , burns , bruises , swellings , slapping , pushing etc . 25% of child abuse cases are of physical type , and it can be hidden under the mask of giving training and inculcating discipline in the child. The care givers may make it look like a punishment , necessary for the child to develop, but one must always remember , that hitting someone , especially such young kids , will never have a positive impact on the child, instead it can leave them in fear of doing something for the rest of their lives.
EMOTIONAL ABUSE-
This involves neglect , when the guardian or parent is emotionally unavailable for the child. Parents are the biggest support system in any child’s life , it is very important that during the initial years , they take special care , that they don’t leave their child unheard , they don’t use words or comments that can impact on the child’s emotional health.
SEXUAL ABUSE-
The most hideous of all assaults , this is when the abuser , rapes , molests the child or uses the child’s body for sexual purposes ( this includes pornography , brothel houses , trafficking etc) . This is not only a legal crime , but an act of such grades of inhumanity that it gets so disturbing to even think about.
CHILD LABOUR-
At an age , when children should be at schools , getting educated , some of them are unfortunate to face world , getting exploited to earn money and live a life. Honestly until the child turns 18 it is the parent’s responsibility to provide the child with the basic needs , but not everyone is fortunate enough to have that.
HOW CAN WE MAKE A CHANGE ?
We can create awareness about the legal rights of the child , and various different help line numbers .
"India has a fairly comprehensive policy and legal framework addressing rights and protection for children, providing opportunities to ensure that all children have equal access to quality protection services. The core child protection legislation for children is enshrined in four main laws: The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act (2000, amended in 2015); The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (2006); The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (2012), and The Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act (1986, amended in 2016). By educating people , good morals and ethics can only come through education.
Being the change itself . Promising ourself that we will never do such kind of crimes . One single change made by everyone can lead to a huge change .
Thank You , for reading so far . This was a small attempt to create awareness about this topic , hopefully it makes a change .
